Fire Forces Families Out of Northwest Calgary Homes

So here’s what happened in Panorama Hills on Monday afternoon — and honestly, it turned into a situation no one in that neighbourhood expected to deal with. Two homes were seriously damaged after a fast-moving fire broke out, and now the residents of both places are having to look for somewhere else to stay.

According to the Calgary Fire Department, crews were called out shortly after 2:45 p.m., when reports came in about heavy smoke and visible flames shooting from a home on Panamount Heights. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had already spread to a second house, which meant more resources had to be rushed to the scene right away. Calgary police were also brought in to block off several surrounding streets so emergency crews could work safely and quickly.

One of the occupants met firefighters as they arrived, and a rapid search was done inside the affected homes to confirm no one else was trapped. Once that was cleared, crews stepped back outside and began setting up what’s known as a water tower — basically a large-volume water stream from the top of a ladder truck. This tactic is used when the fire is seated high up, especially in attic spaces, and a heavy, elevated water flow is needed to bring it under control.

Initial reports suggested the fire may have started somewhere on the exterior of one home, but investigators still have to determine the exact cause and point of origin. Two fire investigators have already been assigned to that part of the work.

Even though one home suffered extremely noticeable damage — with parts of the structure clearly burned out — firefighters were able to keep the fire in the second home mostly contained to the attic. Once the main flames were knocked back and conditions improved, crews went back inside to extinguish any remaining hotspots and conduct a second, more thorough search.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, which is one of the few pieces of good news in an otherwise stressful situation for the people who lived there. Still, the damage is significant enough that both homes were left unlivable for the time being.

For now, the investigation into how the fire started continues, and the families affected are beginning the difficult process of figuring out what comes next.
