Former Ecuador Star Mario Pineida Killed in Shocking Guayaquil Shooting
A wave of shock and grief has swept through Ecuador after the tragic killing of former international footballer Mario Pineida, who was just 33 years old. The news has been deeply unsettling, not only for football fans but for the entire country, as yet another violent incident highlights the growing insecurity in parts of Ecuador.
According to police and local reports, Pineida was shot dead in the city of Guayaquil, in the northern Samanes area, when attackers arrived on motorbikes and opened fire. It was reported that Pineida was with his mother and another woman at the time of the attack. In a horrifying turn of events, one other person was also killed, while a third individual was left wounded. The Interior Ministry later confirmed Pineida’s death, though detailed information about the motive has not yet been officially released.

The former defender was known for his calm presence on the pitch and his steady career in Ecuadorian football. Pineida represented his country on several occasions between 2014 and 2021, earning caps during major tournaments, including the Copa América. His final appearance for the national team came in 2021, when he featured as a late substitute against Brazil. Although he was not part of the squad that went on to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, his contribution to Ecuador’s football journey had already been cemented.
At club level, Pineida began his professional career with Independiente del Valle, where he developed from a young talent into a reliable full-back. Later, he moved to Barcelona de Guayaquil, one of the country’s most storied clubs, and success was found there, with two league titles being won. A brief spell in Brazil with Fluminense followed, adding an international chapter to his career before he returned home.
Tributes have since been shared by clubs and supporters, with Barcelona de Guayaquil expressing sadness and disbelief over his passing. Beyond football, the incident has once again drawn attention to Ecuador’s worsening security situation. The country is on track for its most violent year on record, with thousands of homicides already reported. In recent months, several young footballers have also lost their lives to gun violence, underlining how widespread and indiscriminate the problem has become.
