Fortnite and Major Games Go Down as Widespread Holiday Outage Frustrates Players
If you tried to jump into Fortnite or other popular games recently and were met with endless loading screens or error messages, you weren’t alone. Over the past few days, a massive gaming outage has disrupted some of the biggest titles in the world, turning what should have been a festive holiday gaming period into a frustrating waiting game for millions of players.
It was reported that the outage affected not just Fortnite, but a long list of well-known games and platforms. According to data shared by outage-tracking services, titles like Call of Duty, Marvel Rivals, DOTA 2, Dead by Daylight, Counter-Strike, Elden Ring, Helldivers 2, and Monster Hunter were all hit at roughly the same time. Even Steam, one of the largest PC gaming platforms, was impacted, with more than 50,000 user reports flagging problems during the peak of the disruption.

Most of the complaints pointed to one main issue: server connection failures. Players were locked out before matches could even begin, matchmaking wasn’t working properly, and in some cases, gameplay simply wouldn’t load. Counter-Strike alone saw hundreds of reports initially, with the majority of users saying they couldn’t connect to servers at all. As the hours passed, those reports climbed sharply, crossing the 1,100 mark, showing that the issue was still spreading rather than easing.
Fortnite, which became one of the biggest talking points, was reportedly affected by authentication errors. Thousands of players across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch encountered messages saying there was an error connecting to Epic Games servers. This meant players couldn’t even log in, effectively shutting them out during one of the busiest gaming times of the year, Christmas Eve. Epic Games later confirmed that an investigation was underway, and it was suggested that the issue was limited to login services rather than the entire game infrastructure.
Some signs of recovery were noticed as time went on. Reports for Fortnite began to drop significantly, suggesting that the situation was being brought under control. Marvel Rivals also appeared to stabilize, with fewer complaints coming in compared to earlier spikes. However, other games like DOTA 2 and Arc Raiders continued to see rising numbers, with server connection issues remaining the most common complaint.
For players, the advice was simple but not very satisfying: wait it out. Since the problem was server-side, restarting consoles or reinstalling games wouldn’t fix much. While no exact restoration timeline was shared, past outages of this kind have usually been resolved within a few hours. Still, for many gamers hoping to unwind over the holidays, the downtime was a reminder of just how dependent modern gaming has become on always-online services.
