Germany Reopens Schengen Visa Door for Applicants in Iran
There’s an important development coming out of Tehran that many people have been waiting to hear, especially those hoping to travel to Europe. Germany’s embassy in Iran has officially announced that it will restart accepting new Schengen visa applications, and this change is set to take effect from January 7.
This update was shared through the embassy’s official Instagram page, where it was confirmed that TLScontact, the visa service provider working with the embassy, will reopen its waiting list system. Within 48 hours of the announcement, new waiting lists are expected to go live, allowing applicants to register and begin the process once again. For people who already have TLS accounts, the process has been made slightly easier, as emails will automatically be sent with instructions on how to join the waiting list. New applicants, meanwhile, will be able to create accounts directly on the TLS system.

One detail that has been strongly emphasized is accuracy. Applicants have been reminded that all personal information entered into their online accounts must exactly match the details in their passports. Any mismatch could potentially cause delays or complications, something many applicants are keen to avoid given how challenging the process has been in recent months.
Visa services at the German embassy had been operating under significant limitations, especially after the conflict in June between Iran and Israel. During that period, processing capacity was reduced, and according to many applicants, requirements became stricter and waiting times grew longer. Students, medical patients, and families were among those most affected, with some facing months of uncertainty just to secure an appointment.
The embassy has also acknowledged that its technical and staffing capacities were heavily reduced following the events of June, which explains why visa operations were scaled back for such a long time. Although the restart of applications is a positive step, it has been made clear that details about the number of available appointments and exact processing times have not yet been disclosed.
Germany remains one of the most popular destinations for Iranian travelers, largely because a German-issued Schengen visa allows passport-free movement across 27 European countries. That’s why this announcement has been received with cautious optimism. While the reopening does not guarantee quick approvals or short waiting periods, the fact that applications are being accepted again is seen as a significant move forward.
For now, many applicants are preparing their documents, watching their inboxes, and hoping that this restart signals a gradual return to more stable and predictable visa services in the months ahead.
