Harshit Rana Faces ICC Sanction After Flashpoint in Ranchi ODI

So, here’s what’s been making waves in the cricket world—India’s young fast bowler Harshit Rana has been formally reprimanded by the ICC, and the whole situation unfolded because of a moment of raw emotion during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. It was one of those intense match moments where adrenaline takes over, and that’s exactly what seems to have happened.

During the 22nd over of South Africa’s chase, Rana dismissed Dewald Brevis, a key batter for the Proteas. Now, getting Brevis out is always a big moment for any bowler, but what followed caught the attention of the match officials. After the wicket, Harshit was seen gesturing toward the South African dressing room. It wasn’t anything violent, but it was considered provocative—something that could have triggered an aggressive reaction from the dismissed batter. Because of that, the action was deemed to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

This particular article deals with the use of language, gestures, or actions that can be considered disparaging or could provoke a reaction from a batter after dismissal. In simpler terms, it’s meant to keep on-field behaviour respectful and to prevent things from escalating unnecessarily. So, even though it wasn’t a major blow-up, it still crossed the line according to ICC standards.

As a result, Harshit received an official reprimand and one demerit point added to his disciplinary record. Since this was his first offence in the last 24 months, the consequences are mild, and he won’t face any suspension. Interestingly, he immediately admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction without any need for a hearing. The penalty also included a 50% deduction of his match fees in line with the ICC’s guidelines.

Despite this incident, it’s important to note that Rana had a strong outing with the ball—he took 3 for 65, including two wickets in his very first over. His performance played a key role in India’s 17-run win, backed by a superb century from Virat Kohli. The match itself was competitive and kept fans on edge, and now attention shifts to the second ODI in Raipur.

For Rana, the demerit point will stay on record for 24 months. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within that period, those points convert into suspension points—something every player wants to avoid. But with this being his first, the young pacer will surely be more mindful going forward.

All in all, it was a reminder that while passion drives the sport, the ICC has its guardrails in place to keep things from boiling over.
