Hibs Shock Hearts in a Five-Goal Edinburgh Derby Thriller
If you wanted drama, noise, and raw emotion, this Edinburgh derby delivered it all. Hibernian came out on top with a gripping 3–2 win over Hearts at Easter Road, and it was a game that swung wildly from dominance to desperation before the final whistle finally brought relief to the home crowd.
The tone was set almost immediately. Just three minutes in, Hibs were in front, and the stadium was already bouncing. Jamie McGrath was the man on the scoresheet, finishing off an early move that caught Hearts cold. That early goal seemed to energise Hibernian, while Hearts looked stunned and slow to respond. The pressure kept building, and just before half-time, the hosts struck again. Josh Campbell made it 2–0 on the stroke of the interval, and by then it felt like Hibs had fully seized control of the derby.

Any hopes of a Hearts comeback were dented even further moments after the restart. Within three minutes of the second half, Kieron Bowie added a third for Hibernian, calmly finishing to make it 3–0. At that stage, it looked like a statement win was being put together by a Hibs side playing with hunger and intensity, despite having far less of the ball.
To their credit, Hearts didn’t completely fold. With around 15 minutes to go, Lawrence Shankland pulled one back, heading home from a clever short corner to give the league leaders a lifeline. Suddenly, the mood shifted. Hibs began to defend deeper, time was managed more carefully, and tension crept into every pass and clearance.
That tension exploded late on. A goalkeeping error allowed Cammy Devlin to score in the 89th minute, cutting the deficit to 3–2 and sending Hearts supporters into belief and Hibs fans into near panic. The final minutes were chaotic. Chances were created, shots were flying in, and Raphael Sallinger was forced into crucial saves during stoppage time to preserve the lead.
When the final whistle went, it was met with pure relief from the Hibernian end. Despite having only around a third of the possession, Hibs were more clinical, more aggressive, and far more committed when it mattered. Hearts, who came into the match top of the table, were left to reflect on a sluggish first half that ultimately cost them.
In the end, this derby will be remembered as a reminder that form and league position mean little on days like this. Pride, intensity, and execution decided it, and this time, Hibernian came out on top.
