Hit-and-Run Tragedy in Rimouski Leaves Elderly Cyclist Dead
There’s a heartbreaking story coming out of Rimouski that has shaken the local community and raised serious questions about road safety and responsibility. Early Monday morning, just before the day had really begun, a tragic collision unfolded on boulevard Saint-Germain, near the Super C grocery store. An 81-year-old cyclist was struck by a vehicle, and what makes this even more devastating is that the driver reportedly fled the scene instead of stopping to help.
According to initial information shared by the Sûreté du Québec, the collision happened around 6:45 a.m. The cyclist and the vehicle were both traveling westbound when the impact occurred. By the time police arrived, the cyclist was found lying motionless on the ground. A police officer who happened to be in the area, even though she was off duty and in civilian clothes, was first on the scene. Life-saving measures were immediately started, showing how every second mattered in those critical moments.

The injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors worked to stabilize him. Sadly, despite those efforts, his injuries were too severe, and his death was confirmed later in the morning. The victim was identified as an 81-year-old man, though his name has not been released publicly.
What has added to the shock and anger surrounding this incident is the fact that it is being treated as a hit-and-run, which is considered a criminal offense. Police confirmed that the driver involved left the area before emergency services arrived. As of now, no description of the vehicle or the suspect has been shared, and investigators are actively searching for any leads that could help identify the person responsible.
To allow a full investigation, boulevard Saint-Germain was shut down in both directions for several hours. A collision reconstruction specialist was brought in to carefully analyze the scene, examine evidence, and piece together exactly how the crash occurred. Traffic was redirected through nearby streets while the investigation was underway, causing disruptions but underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
This tragedy has left many residents reflecting on how vulnerable cyclists can be, especially in low-light morning conditions. It has also sparked renewed calls for accountability, reminding everyone that staying at the scene and calling for help is not just a moral obligation, but a legal one.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or noticed a damaged vehicle in the area to come forward. For now, a family is left grieving, a community is mourning, and a search is ongoing for answers and justice.
