India Women Cruise Past Sri Lanka in Vizag Opener with Jemimah Masterclass

So, the Women’s T20I series between India and Sri Lanka got off to a confident and composed start in Visakhapatnam, and it was India Women who clearly set the tone. In the opening match of this five-game series, Sri Lanka were beaten by eight wickets, giving India an early 1–0 lead and plenty of positives to take forward.

The match began with India winning the toss, and it was decided that bowling first would be the best option. Sri Lanka were put into bat, and while they showed some resistance, the Indian bowling attack kept things tight throughout the innings. Sri Lanka eventually finished on 121 for 6 in their 20 overs, a total that always looked slightly below par on this surface. Vishmi Gunaratne stood out for the visitors, top-scoring with a composed 39 runs, but consistent pressure meant big partnerships were never really allowed to develop. For India, wickets were shared nicely, with Kranti Gaud, Deepti Sharma, and N. Shree Charani each chipping in, ensuring the scoring rate stayed under control.

When India came out to chase 122, the approach looked calm and confident right from the start. There was no panic, no unnecessary risks, and the target was approached with clarity. The highlight of the chase was undoubtedly Jemimah Rodrigues, who played a beautifully timed knock of 69 not out from just 44 balls. Her innings was full of smart shot selection, late cuts, and excellent placement, and it was clear she was batting with complete freedom. The chase was wrapped up in just 14.4 overs, underlining India’s dominance on the night.

Jemimah was deservedly named Player of the Match, and later she spoke about her simple batting mindset. It was explained that when things feel good, the focus is on extending that form for as long as possible. Rather than worrying about the score, she stayed “blank” and reacted purely to the ball, which allowed her natural game to shine. The slightly sticky conditions were acknowledged, but good touch made all the difference.

Beyond the result, this match also carried bigger significance. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, this five-match T20 series is part of India’s preparation for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. Every game is being treated as a building block, and the message from the camp is clear: what’s gone before doesn’t matter, and each match is a fresh opportunity to improve and win.

The next T20 will be played on December 23, again in Visakhapatnam, before the series shifts to Thiruvananthapuram for the remaining games. If this opener is anything to go by, India will be looking to carry the same momentum forward.
