Isak Injury Blow Raises Fresh Concerns for Liverpool

Right now, there’s a growing sense of worry around Liverpool after Alexander Isak picked up what is feared to be a significant lower leg injury during the 2–1 win over Tottenham. It was one of those moments that felt cruelly ironic. Isak had only just come onto the pitch and made an immediate impact, breaking the deadlock with a well-taken goal, when everything suddenly turned sour.

The incident happened as he got his shot away. Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven slid across, and Isak’s planted leg was caught in the challenge. The goal stood, but the damage appeared to have been done. Almost immediately, it was clear something wasn’t right. Isak tried to continue, but the discomfort was obvious, and before long he was forced to leave the pitch, helped off by Liverpool’s medical staff.

Since then, concern has been growing behind the scenes. An MRI scan was carried out on Sunday, and the results are expected to determine just how serious the injury is and how long the 26-year-old could be sidelined. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has already hinted that the signs are not encouraging. After the match, it was pointed out that when a player scores and then doesn’t even attempt to return to the pitch, it’s usually a bad sign. While nothing medical has been confirmed yet, the uncertainty alone is enough to unsettle the club.

This injury comes at a particularly frustrating time for Isak. His Liverpool career has never really had the chance to settle into a rhythm. After a complicated summer move from Newcastle, his pre-season was disrupted, and match fitness was always going to be an issue. Since arriving at Anfield, minutes have been limited, starts have been rare, and confidence has been hard to build. Saturday’s goal, only his second in the Premier League this season, looked like it might finally be a turning point.

Instead, Liverpool now face another headache in attack. Mohamed Salah is away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, Cody Gakpo remains sidelined with injury, and options are suddenly looking thin. Hugo Ekitike is expected to shoulder more responsibility, especially after continuing his strong form with a goal of his own against Spurs. Still, losing a £125 million striker at this stage of the season was never part of the plan.

For now, everything hinges on those scan results. Liverpool fans will be hoping the worst fears aren’t realised, but until clarity arrives, the feeling around Anfield is one of anxiety rather than celebration.
