James Van Der Beek Opens Up About Weight Loss and an Emotional Dawson’s Creek Reunion
There’s been a lot of conversation lately around James Van Der Beek, especially after fans noticed his dramatic weight loss during the recent Dawson’s Creek reunion. Now, the actor himself has stepped forward to explain what was really going on, and the story turned out to be far more emotional and heartfelt than anyone expected.
James Van Der Beek recently appeared on the Today show for a sit-down interview, where he addressed the concern head-on. It was made clear that the weight loss seen during the reunion was not related to his ongoing battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer. Instead, it was explained that he had been hit hard by a severe stomach virus around the time of the event. Because of that illness, he was unable to attend the reunion in person, which understandably left fans worried and full of questions.

The reunion itself, held in September, marked the first time the original Dawson’s Creek cast had come together since the show ended back in 2003. While James couldn’t be there physically, he joined the event through Zoom. What happened next was something he described as one of the most beautiful moments of his life. As his family took their seats at the venue, they were met with a standing ovation from fans. All the love and admiration that would normally have been directed at him was instead given to his wife and children.
As he recalled the moment, his emotions clearly took over. It was shared that watching his family receive that kind of warmth and support meant more to him than words could express. Even though he was crushed about missing the reunion, he said the experience turned into something unexpectedly powerful and meaningful.
James also reassured viewers that, despite how he looked during the Zoom appearance, he is actually feeling much better now than he did a few months ago. The stomach virus had caused rapid weight loss, but he emphasized that it was not caused by cancer. Still, he joked that when you’re dealing with cancer, even small health issues can feel much bigger and more alarming.
The reunion itself raised money for cancer-related causes, including funds to support James’s treatment. The cast came together for a table read of the show’s original pilot episode, with familiar faces like Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams, and others in attendance. Even Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to read James’s role during the event.
In the end, what stood out most wasn’t the weight loss or the absence, but the overwhelming support from fans and the deep gratitude James Van Der Beek feels toward the community that has followed him since his Dawson’s Creek days.
