Janet Street-Porter’s Dramatic Property U-Turn Stuns Escape to the Country Viewers
So, this episode of Celebrity Escape to the Country turned out to be far more dramatic than anyone expected, especially with Janet Street-Porter involved. The show returned to BBC One with Alistair Appleton facing what was clearly one of his toughest challenges yet. He was tasked with helping the famously outspoken Loose Women star find her perfect seaside escape, and from the very beginning, it was clear this wasn’t going to be a straightforward house hunt.
The search initially began in Suffolk, where Janet laid out her requirements in no uncertain terms. She wanted coastal views, peace, quiet, and most importantly, no neighbours. Two properties were presented, and while they looked appealing on paper, they simply didn’t pass Janet’s test. It was openly stated that neither home offered the level of solitude she was after, and in a brutally honest moment, Alistair was told he had failed. That alone set the tone for what followed.

However, the episode took an unexpected twist when Janet revealed she might be open to looking much further afield, as long as her needs were met. That comment triggered what Alistair described as a first in the show’s history. Instead of tweaking the search locally, a bold decision was made to take a 500-mile leap north to the Hebridean island of Islay, off Scotland’s west coast. It was explained that the island is home to just around 3,000 people, instantly ticking the “no neighbours” box.
Once the search reached Scotland, a noticeable change in Janet was observed. There was suddenly real engagement with the properties, and it became clear that the combination of location and isolation was working its magic. While the first Islay home caught her attention, it was the second, surprise property that truly won her over. The quirky house, located four miles from Port Ellen, featured a grass-covered roof that allowed it to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
Her reaction said it all. It was admitted she could see herself living there alone, perfectly content. To make the experience even more special, Alistair revealed that an overnight stay had been arranged, allowing Janet and her companion to fully soak in the atmosphere. The excitement was obvious, and it was later revealed that the stay had been extended by an extra week.
By the end of the episode, it was reflected that the long journey from Suffolk to Scotland had paid off. Janet’s love for silence, space, and stillness had finally been satisfied, and viewers were left with one of the most memorable Escape to the Country episodes in recent years.
