John Mateer’s Viral Rumor and the Truth Behind His Playoff Plans
So, here’s what’s been circulating — and why a lot of Oklahoma fans had a brief moment of panic this week. A viral social media post started making the rounds, claiming that Sooners quarterback John Mateer was opting out of the College Football Playoff to begin preparing for the NFL Draft. The post looked convincing enough at first glance. It even included a fake quote from Mateer saying the decision was “the right move for my future.” For a moment, the story spread fast and loud.
But here’s the reality: the entire thing was fake.

The post came from an account called 274Sport, and it completely duped a chunk of the fanbase. Thankfully, it was quickly debunked. Reporters close to the program, including The Oklahoman’s Colton Sulley, confirmed that Mateer has not opted out and that his focus is fully on the Sooners’ playoff run. Oklahoma officials haven’t indicated any change in his availability either, so the whole situation ended up being nothing more than a social-media flare-up.
Of course, the rumor didn’t come out of nowhere. Mateer’s first season in the SEC has been a complicated ride. Early on, he was generating real buzz — even some early Heisman whispers. He helped lead Oklahoma to a strong 4–0 start with big wins over Auburn and Michigan, showing off the blend of arm talent and mobility that made him such an exciting transfer from Washington State.
Then came the hand injury against Auburn in late September. And after he returned, things just weren’t the same. His production dipped. The offense struggled at times. Over the final seven regular-season games, he completed under 60% of his passes and threw nearly as many interceptions as touchdowns. For a guy who once looked like a top 2026 draft prospect in the making, it was a noticeable shift.
Part of the challenge has been the transition — not just for Mateer, but for Oklahoma’s new offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. Both came from Washington State, both stepped into the SEC for the first time, and both experienced the adjustment curve that comes with competing in the toughest conference in college football. The highs and lows were shared.
Even so, Oklahoma kept winning. Sometimes with Mateer’s help. Sometimes despite his inconsistencies. And now, all that matters is the next opportunity: a College Football Playoff showdown with Alabama.
After that, Mateer will have a major decision waiting for him. He’s draft-eligible. He has another year of eligibility left. And his long-term future is very much an open question. But for now, the noise has been cleared away. The viral rumor has been put to rest. And everything — for Mateer and for Oklahoma — is focused squarely on the playoff stage ahead.
