Kate Bush Speaks Out After Beloved Friend Goes Missing at Sea
There’s some deeply emotional news coming out of Devon involving legendary singer-songwriter Kate Bush, and it’s a story that has clearly shaken her to the core. Kate Bush has said she is “heartbroken” after one of her closest friends, Matthew Upham, went missing during a Christmas Day swim in the sea.
Matthew Upham, a well-known local antiques dealer, was described by Bush as one of her “very dearest friends,” someone she had known and loved for around 30 years. According to reports, emergency services were called to Budleigh Salterton in Devon shortly after 10:25 in the morning on Christmas Day, when two men, aged in their 40s and 60s, could not be located following a swim. Despite hours of searching by the coastguard and other emergency teams, the operation was called off at around 5pm, leaving families and friends devastated.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on her official website, Kate Bush spoke openly about her grief. Matthew was remembered as someone who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was described as extraordinarily kind, thoughtful, and full of life. It was said that he lived life to the fullest and brought joy wherever he went. Bush also shared that he was a great deal of fun, the kind of person whose presence instantly lifted others.
She went on to explain that Matthew was a very strong swimmer and had a deep love for the sea, especially kayaking. He was someone who respected the power of the ocean and understood its dangers, which has made the tragedy even harder to accept. His death, she said, was profoundly tragic, and the sense of loss is being felt far beyond his immediate circle. In her words, the world has lost someone incredibly special.
Kate Bush also made it clear that the heartbreak extends to Matthew’s family, who are struggling to come to terms with the loss. In a separate statement shared through his business’s social media account, the family described him as a deeply beloved family member who will be forever missed. Gratitude was expressed toward the RNLI, the coastguard, and all emergency services involved, praising their dedication, professionalism, and compassion during an incredibly painful time. The family has also asked for privacy as they grieve together.
Police inquiries are still ongoing, but for those who knew Matthew Upham, what remains strongest is the memory of a generous, joyful, and deeply loved man whose absence will be felt for a very long time.
