Late Drama at Coopers Stadium as Adelaide United Edge Wanderers 3-2
It turned into one of those classic A-League nights at Coopers Stadium, where momentum kept swinging and the drama refused to stop until the very last moments. Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers brought two very different styles to the pitch, and over ninety-plus minutes, five goals were delivered in an entertaining 3-2 win for the Reds.
From the opening stages, Western Sydney were clearly on the front foot. Possession was controlled by the visitors early on, and Adelaide goalkeeper Joshua Smits was kept busy as Brandon Borrello and Alou Kuol both tested him with sharp efforts. Despite that pressure, no breakthrough was found, and that would soon come back to hurt the Wanderers. Adelaide were happy to sit deep and wait, and when the chance came, it was taken clinically. A long switch from Craig Goodwin found Yaya Dukuly on the right, space was created, and the cut-back was smashed home by Luka Jovanović off the crossbar. Against the run of play, Adelaide went into halftime leading 1-0.

After the break, Western Sydney kept pushing, and eventually their persistence paid off. Aydan Hammond let fly from range, and with a deflection off Vinko StaniÅ¡ić wrong-footing Smits, the ball found the net. At 1-1, it felt like the Wanderers were back in control. But once again, Adelaide responded when it mattered. From a corner, Goodwin picked out substitute Austin Ayoubi, whose near-post run was timed perfectly to restore the home side’s lead.
That advantage lasted barely a minute. A sliding challenge from Stanišić brought down Angus Thurgate in the box, and a penalty was awarded. Borrello stepped up and calmly converted, making it 2-2 and setting up a frantic finish. Chances came and went, including a stunning fingertip save from Smits late on that denied Bozhidar Kraev and kept Adelaide alive.
Then, in stoppage time, the decisive moment arrived. Adelaide broke quickly on the counter, and local youngster Jonny Yull took responsibility. Cutting in from the left onto his right foot, he curled a low shot beyond a diving Lawrence Thomas. The stadium erupted as the ball hit the net, and the three points were secured in dramatic fashion.
It was a night where Western Sydney created plenty but were punished for missed opportunities, while Adelaide showed ruthless efficiency and belief. Back-to-back wins were sealed by local talent stepping up, and Coopers Stadium was left buzzing long after the final whistle.
