McCarthy and Vikings Crush Dallas as Cowboys’ Playoff Hopes Take a Big Hit
If you were watching Sunday night, it quickly became clear that this game meant very different things for each team. The Minnesota Vikings may have already been eliminated from the playoff race, but they played with freedom, confidence, and nothing to lose. The Dallas Cowboys, on the other hand, were fighting for their postseason lives. By the end of the night, it was Minnesota walking out of Arlington with a 34–26 win, and Dallas left staring at a brutally narrow path forward.
The spotlight was firmly on rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, and he delivered one of his most complete performances of the season. Two touchdown passes were thrown, another score was added on the ground, and the Vikings’ offense was kept moving at key moments. While there were some early jitters, including an interception on his first pass, McCarthy settled in and looked far more comfortable as the game went on. It was said afterward that experience is starting to show, and that calm was evident in the pocket.

Minnesota struck first with a 20-yard touchdown catch by Jalen Nailor, who ended up being McCarthy’s favorite target on the night. Nailor would catch both touchdown passes, including a crucial score early in the fourth quarter that stretched the Vikings’ lead and shifted all the pressure back onto Dallas. One of the most surprising moments came when fullback C.J. Ham scored the go-ahead touchdown on his first carry of the entire season, a one-yard plunge that gave Minnesota a 24–23 lead late in the third quarter.
For the Cowboys, this was a frustrating night filled with missed opportunities. Dak Prescott put up solid numbers, throwing for nearly 300 yards, but he was held without a touchdown pass for only the third time all season. Dallas leaned on short rushing scores and the reliable leg of Brandon Aubrey, who kicked four field goals. However, the story changed when Aubrey missed twice from long range at home, something that had not happened in his NFL career until now. Those misses turned into points for Minnesota and proved costly.
Late-game execution favored the Vikings. A turnover on downs, a successful fourth-down run by Aaron Jones, and a clutch 53-yard field goal sealed the outcome. Even when Dallas pulled within eight points in the final seconds, the onside kick was recovered by Minnesota, officially ending the Cowboys’ comeback hopes.
With this loss, Dallas’ playoff situation became dire. Now, not only must the Cowboys win out, but help from rivals is desperately needed. Meanwhile, the Vikings walked away with back-to-back wins, pride intact, and a young quarterback showing signs that the future may be brighter than the standings suggest.
