Mito Pereira Shocks Golf World With Retirement at 30
In a stunning turn of events, Chilean golfer Mito Pereira has announced his retirement from professional golf at just 30 years old. Known for his remarkable talent and a career full of highs and lows, Pereira cited a desire to leave the constant travel behind and return to Chile to focus on his personal life as the key reason for this decision.
Pereira’s journey in golf has been anything but ordinary. Born in Santiago, Chile, he moved to Florida at the age of 14 to enroll at the prestigious IMG Academy, already recognized as a rising star. He had shown early promise, finishing runner-up in the Boys 10–11 division at the 2006 Optimist International Junior Golf Championship and winning the 12–13 division in 2008. Yet, just six months after joining IMG, Pereira stepped away from the sport for two years, exploring other passions like soccer, tennis, and dirt biking. “I got tired of it,” he admitted in a 2022 interview. Eventually, his love for golf drew him back, and the decision to return proved transformative.

After a brief stint at Texas Tech University, where he excelled in collegiate golf, Pereira climbed as high as fifth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking before turning professional in 2015. His professional career was highlighted by three Korn Ferry Tour victories and an unforgettable performance at the 2022 PGA Championship, where he led after 54 holes and shot a third-round 64, narrowly missing the playoff by a single stroke.
In 2023, Pereira joined LIV Golf alongside fellow Chilean Joaquin Niemann. Though he experienced the thrill of international competition and was part of Team Torque, he faced challenges on the circuit, eventually being relegated after finishing 51st in the standings. Despite these setbacks, Pereira reached a career-high ranking of 41st in the Official World Golf Ranking and represented Chile at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, just missing a bronze medal in a dramatic playoff.
In his retirement announcement, Pereira reflected on the many experiences golf gave him. He spoke about the personal growth, international travel, and lifelong friendships that came through the sport. He also expressed gratitude toward his family, coaches, sponsors, and fans, emphasizing the lessons of resilience, discipline, and perseverance he had learned along the way.
Now, Pereira is ready to begin a new chapter in Chile, leaving behind the life of constant travel and competition to focus on his personal life. Though his departure surprises many, he assures fans that he is at peace and proud of what he accomplished. For Mito Pereira, the golf journey was extraordinary, and while the fairways may now be behind him, the memories, achievements, and lessons will stay forever.
