Newton Eagles Halt Arp’s Historic Playoff Run

So here’s what’s been happening down in Lufkin, where high school football once again delivered one of those nights people will be talking about for a long time. The Arp Tigers, who had been on an incredible run this season, saw that journey finally come to an end after falling to the Newton Eagles in the state quarterfinals. The game wrapped up with a final score of 66–20 in favor of Newton, and even though the scoreboard looked one-sided, the bigger story is just how far Arp pushed this season.

This was the first time since 2016 that Arp managed to reach the quarterfinals, and that alone had energized the entire community. They came into this matchup with a 12–1 record, riding an eight-game winning streak, and averaging well over 40 points per game. Their offense had been explosive, their defense steady, and their confidence as high as it had been in years. But on this particular night, they ran into a Newton team that simply would not be slowed down.

Newton, also sitting at 12–1 entering the game, has been a powerhouse all year, scoring more than 50 points per game on average. Their offense came out firing again, and Arp just couldn’t find a way to disrupt their rhythm. Even so, the Tigers fought from the first snap to the last. Players like Josh Smith, Tanner Hunt, and Zane Bourque had been at the heart of Arp’s success all season, and they battled hard to keep their team in the game. It just happened to be one of those nights where every break went Newton’s way.

What really stands out, though, is the resilience Arp showed throughout the year. They improved week by week, reached heights the program hadn’t seen in nearly a decade, and gave their fans a season full of big plays, memorable wins, and genuine hope. A 12–2 finish with a deep playoff run is something any program would be proud of, especially considering the growth shown on both sides of the ball.

Newton’s win means they’re now on their way to the state semifinals, where they’ll face East Bernard, a team sitting at 10–4 and looking to keep its own postseason momentum going. For Newton, the chase for a championship continues. For Arp, the season may be over, but the foundation has clearly been laid for something special in the years to come.

The Tigers didn’t just reach the quarterfinals—they reminded everyone why high school football in Texas is filled with heart, tradition, and nights like this where a community comes together, win or lose.
