Noah Okafor Faces Make-or-Break Moment at Leeds United
Right now, Noah Okafor finds himself at a real crossroads in his Leeds United career, and the upcoming clash against Sunderland could define what happens next. Daniel Farke is understood to be preparing to give the Swiss international one final opportunity to prove his worth, but the pressure surrounding this decision couldn’t be clearer.
Leeds have recently been reshaped by a tactical switch to a 3-5-2 formation, and it has paid off. The team is unbeaten in four matches, confidence has returned, and survival hopes look far stronger than they did earlier in the season. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has thrived in a strike partnership, and before his injury, Lukas Nmecha showed signs of forming a dangerous duo up front. Since Nmecha was sidelined, Okafor has stepped into that role, but his performances have failed to convince, even as results have gone Leeds’ way.

This is where the concern really sets in. Okafor began the season with promise, scoring twice in his first five Premier League starts after arriving in an £18 million deal. However, that early spark has faded badly. He has now gone nine matches without a goal contribution, and he hasn’t looked comfortable playing through the middle. His strongest displays for Leeds have come when operating off the left, where his pace and direct running caused defenders real problems. In the current system, that strength has been taken away.
Competition is also intensifying. Wilfried Gnonto has made a strong case for a starting role with impactful cameos off the bench, and his versatility mirrors that of Okafor. On top of that, Nmecha is expected to return soon, which could push Okafor even further down the pecking order. With the January transfer window approaching, uncomfortable conversations may be looming behind the scenes.
Interest from Serie A has already been mentioned, and a return to Italy would not be surprising if his struggles continue. That scenario would be disastrous for Leeds, who invested heavily in Okafor and saw him as a statement signing. Yet, from Farke’s perspective, the priority is survival, and tactical sacrifices are sometimes unavoidable.
Sunday’s match at the Stadium of Light now feels like a final audition. If Okafor can rediscover his sharpness and show why Leeds paid so much for him, his future at Elland Road could still be salvaged. If not, time may finally run out, and his Leeds chapter could be nearing an early and disappointing conclusion.
