One Battle After Another Leads a Globes Race Full of Surprises
The 2026 Golden Globe nominations were rolled out on Monday morning, and the announcement instantly set the tone for what’s shaping up to be a lively awards season. The list was revealed from Beverly Hills by Marlon Wayans and Skye P. Marshall, and right away it became clear that Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another would be the film to beat. It dominated the board with nine nominations, covering everything from acting to directing to screenplay. Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn and Chase Infiniti were all recognized, showing just how widely the film’s performances resonated.
Right behind it was Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value , which received eight nominations. Interestingly, four of its actors were singled out, proving that this intimate family story struck a powerful chord with voters. And international films weren’t just placed into their own category this year — they moved directly into the center of the major lineups. Canadians also had a strong moment. Korean-Canadian filmmaker Maggie Kang earned a nomination for her animated feature KPop Demon Hunters , while Toronto’s Domee Shi returned with Elio . Even more surprising, KPop Demon Hunters found itself among the contenders for the Globes’ cinematic-achievement award—despite not being a traditional theatrical release.
On the TV side, the competition tightened even further. Familiar favorites like The Bear , Only Murders in the Building , Severance , and The White Lotus returned, while newer titles such as The Pitt , Pluribus , and Adolescence secured prominent placements. Jacob Elordi and Amanda Seyfried became double nominees this year, recognized for both their film work and their roles in limited series.
Another returning element is the Globes’ fondness for established star power. Julia Roberts, despite quieter awards buzz elsewhere, scored yet another nomination for After the Hunt . Emily Blunt was also included, reaffirming that Globes voters rarely skip an opportunity to acknowledge her.
Looking ahead, the ceremony is set for January 11, hosted once again by Nikki Glaser after her well-received debut last year. Ahead of the main event, Helen Mirren will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Sarah Jessica Parker will be honored with the Carol Burnett Award, both presented during the new televised special Golden Eve .
