Brisbane and parts of south-east Queensland have been hit by a major internet outage, with Optus NBN services disrupted for thousands of customers. The telco has issued a public apology for the inconvenience, acknowledging that the outages began early Wednesday morning and continued well into the afternoon.

The problems have affected both residential and business customers, with some people reporting that they were unable to make emergency Triple Zero calls from their landlines. Optus confirmed that mobile services were largely unaffected, meaning calls could still be made using mobile phones. However, those relying solely on NBN-connected home phones without 4G or 5G backup were left completely disconnected.

Optus explained that the outage was caused by a network server failure at their Rochedale exchange in Brisbane. Technicians have been working on-site throughout the day, and the company stated that up to 95,000 customers were gradually regaining access to NBN services as restoration efforts continued. Despite these efforts, Optus has not provided a specific timeline for full restoration.

Frustrated customers shared their experiences on local radio, describing hours without connectivity. One resident, Paul from Sandgate, said his landline was dead, leaving him unable to reach emergency services. Another listener, Brian from Enoggera, spent over an hour and a half on the phone with an automated support system, never connecting with a human agent. Reports of intermittent mobile data issues were also noted, though NBN connections were the primary problem.

The Queensland government, along with the Queensland Ambulance Service, has been closely monitoring the situation to ensure that emergency services remain accessible despite the disruptions. Optus emphasized that teams were working as quickly as possible to restore services and thanked customers for their patience.

This outage comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Optus, following a significant outage in September that prevented hundreds of customers from reaching Triple Zero, resulting in several deaths. Recent incidents, including another disruption in Melbourne and damage to a fibre line in NSW, have intensified the spotlight on the company’s network reliability.

For now, customers are advised to use mobile phones for urgent calls and to remain patient while Optus continues its restoration work. The incident highlights the growing reliance on digital networks and the vulnerability of services when technical failures occur, especially in critical areas like emergency communications.
