Racing Mourns the Loss of Young Jockey Bronte Simpson
The racing world has been left heartbroken by the tragic loss of apprentice jockey Bronte Simpson, a young rider whose life and career were just beginning to take shape. News of her passing has sent shockwaves through racing communities across Australia, with tributes pouring in for a woman remembered not only for her talent, but for her determination and kindness.
Bronte Simpson was just 24 years old when her life was cut short following a single-vehicle accident on the Castlereagh Highway, around 80 kilometres north-west of Dubbo. It was reported that a passing motorist stopped to help and called emergency services, but despite those efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene. The circumstances have been described as a tragic accident, and police have confirmed that a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Raised in Ballarat, Simpson grew up around horses and developed a passion for riding at an early age. It was often said that she was on a horse before she could even walk. Although her family did not come from a racing background, the sport clearly called to her. That calling eventually led her to New South Wales, where she pursued her dream of becoming a professional jockey.
Her apprenticeship began under trainer Sara Ryan before she later moved to Tamworth to work with Jane Clement. Along the way, her resilience became one of her defining traits. In 2023, she suffered a horrific broken jaw after being kicked, an injury that would have ended many careers. Instead, she fought her way back to the saddle, refusing to give up on her goals.
That determination was rewarded in May this year, when she rode her first winner on debut at Muswellbrook aboard Stylebender. It was a moment that many now describe as unforgettable. From there, her confidence and results continued to grow. In total, 14 career wins were recorded, with her most recent victory coming just 11 days before her passing, riding Toulon Factor at Warren.
The response from the racing community has been one of deep sorrow and unity. Fellow jockeys, trainers, and industry figures have spoken openly about the pain of losing someone so young and full of promise. Many have shared messages of love for Simpson’s family, friends, and colleagues, describing her as a familiar, warm presence who chased her dreams with courage.
As the racing world mourns, Bronte Simpson is being remembered not just for her wins, but for her spirit. She leaves behind a legacy of passion, perseverance, and a reminder of how fragile life can be, even for those who seem destined for great things.
