San Antonio’s First Marathon Brings the City Together in a Big Weekend Celebration
San Antonio is buzzing right now, and you can almost feel the energy building across the city. The very first San Antonio Marathon is just about to take over the streets, and preparations are already in full swing. Barricades have been stacked, clocks are counting down, and thousands of runners are gearing up for what’s shaping up to be a major community moment.
What makes this weekend special is that it’s not just one race. There’s a Friday night 5K, a half marathon, and of course, the full marathon. Altogether, about 18,000 runners are expected to fill the streets, which is already a huge sign of how much excitement this new event has generated. In fact, all three races are sold out, and organizers say there are more than twice as many marathoners signed up compared to the final Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon last year.

This inaugural edition introduces a brand-new course, designed with a clear purpose: to showcase the stories and character of San Antonio’s neighborhoods. San Antonio Sports President and CEO Jenny Carnes explained that the goal from the beginning was to do something completely different and truly local. The new route winds through King William, Monte Vista, Olmos Park, Alamo Heights, and the Pearl—areas full of history, charm, and small businesses that make the city feel alive.
And those small businesses are ready. Storefronts along the course, like Bubbles & Bourbon near the Pearl, are anticipating a surge in foot traffic. Owners say the marathon isn’t just a sporting event—it’s an opportunity to bring new faces into their shops and highlight local business culture during a moment when thousands of people are passing by. That kind of boost can be huge.
Of course, with an event of this scale, the city is preparing in other ways too. Police have announced road closures throughout the downtown area and along major streets like Broadway, Losoya, and sections of Highway 281. Some freeway exits will shut down early Sunday morning, so drivers are being encouraged to plan ahead. The start line will be at Main Plaza, and the finish will be at Hemisfair—two iconic spots that help anchor the marathon right in the heart of the city.
Meanwhile, the marathon expo is rolling out at the Henry B. González Convention Center, featuring everything from fitness gear to local wellness partners. Running clubs across San Antonio are also stepping in to welcome newcomers, reminding runners that their determination, regardless of pace or background, inspires the entire community.
So this weekend isn’t just about miles—it’s about celebrating San Antonio, its neighborhoods, its people, and the story this brand-new marathon is starting to tell.
