Sports Personality of the Year 2025 Shines a Spotlight on Team Excellence

Right now, all eyes in the sporting world are on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 awards, and one of the most talked-about categories is Team of the Year. Voting had been opened to the public, and fans across the country were invited to have their say on which team truly defined sporting excellence this year. Three outstanding contenders were shortlisted, each representing a remarkable chapter in British and European sport.

At the heart of the conversation were England’s women’s football team, the Lionesses. Their Euro 2025 campaign was nothing short of dramatic. Once again, they were crowned European champions, this time after a tense penalty shootout victory over world champions Spain. What made the achievement even more special was that it happened on foreign soil, something no senior England football team had ever managed before. It was not an easy journey. Goals were conceded first in every knockout match, extra time was repeatedly required, and pressure mounted with every round. Still, resilience was shown, substitutions changed games, and belief never seemed to fade. That fighting spirit allowed the Lionesses to become only the second nation ever to retain a European Championship title.

Also standing proudly on the shortlist were England’s women’s rugby union team, the Red Roses. Their year was defined by dominance and history. In September, the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy was lifted in front of a world-record crowd of more than 81,000 fans at Twickenham, as Canada were defeated 33-13 in a commanding final. It was the Red Roses’ first World Cup triumph since 2014, and it capped off a remarkable unbeaten run that stretched to 33 matches. Earlier in the year, another Six Nations Grand Slam had been secured, making it four in a row, alongside a seventh consecutive title. Consistency, power, and composure were on display throughout the season.

Completing the trio were the European Ryder Cup team, whose success came under intense pressure on American soil. Led by captain Luke Donald, Europe managed to fend off a fierce United States comeback at Bethpage Black in New York to claim a dramatic 15-13 victory. It was only the fifth time Europe had won the Ryder Cup in the USA since the competition began, and the first since the famous Miracle of Medinah in 2012. A commanding early lead was built, nerves were tested on the final day, but composure held firm. That win also marked back-to-back Ryder Cup triumphs for Europe, reinforcing their modern dominance in the event.

The winner of the Team of the Year award was ultimately revealed live during the Sports Personality of the Year 2025 show on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. As with every year, the award wasn’t just about trophies or statistics. It was about shared moments, collective belief, and teams that captured the imagination of fans everywhere. In 2025, team sport truly took centre stage.
