Steph Curry Sidelined as Warriors Face 76ers in Tough Road Test

So, here’s what’s going on tonight as the Golden State Warriors head into Philadelphia to take on the 76ers. Fans were hoping to see Steph Curry light it up, but it’s been confirmed that he won’t be on the floor. Curry has already missed the last couple of games because of a quad injury, and it was officially announced that he’s been ruled out again. In fact, he didn’t even travel with the team for this entire road trip. That means he’s not just missing the matchup in Philly — he’ll also sit out the upcoming games in Cleveland and Chicago.

What’s interesting is that he was initially expected to miss about a week, but that timeline has stretched beyond two weeks now. For a Warriors team stuck in a packed Western Conference race, that’s far from ideal. They’re sitting right at 11-11, which places them eighth in the West, and their road performance hasn’t been great. They’ve only won four of their twelve away games, and now they’re taking on a tough three-game swing without the player who usually carries their offense.

To make things even more complicated, Jimmy Butler — the Warriors’ other major offensive engine — is out too. He tweaked his knee in the loss to Oklahoma City, and although he was listed as questionable earlier, he was ultimately ruled out. When you look at the numbers, the impact is clear. With Butler on the floor and Curry off, Golden State has still been competitive. But when both of them sit, their offensive rating drops into the basement, scoring just 102 points per 100 possessions. That’s about as rough as it gets.

Meanwhile, the Sixers aren’t exactly fully healthy either. Joel Embiid was questionable with knee issues, but he’s been cleared to play tonight. Paul George, Kelly Oubre, and Trendon Watford, however, remain out. Even with those injuries, the Sixers are slightly ahead in the East with an 11-9 record, and they’ve won two of their last three, including a strong performance over the Wizards earlier this week.

One player who has a really good setup tonight is Tyrese Maxey. He has been on fire recently, averaging over 30 points per game across his last ten appearances. With the Warriors missing their two best offensive threats, Maxey has a real chance to keep rolling. The Warriors may try to counter with defense — they’ve been a top-10 defensive team this season — but they’re going to need that identity more than ever without Curry and Butler.

This is also the first of two meetings between these teams this season, with the next one set for early February. But for now, Golden State walks into Philadelphia facing a huge challenge, and unfortunately, they’ll have to do it without their superstar.
