Sunderland Triumphs in Wearside Derby with Woltemade’s Own Goal
Sunderland secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Newcastle in the Wearside derby at the Stadium of Light, thanks to a nightmare own goal from Newcastle's Nick Woltemade. In a fiercely contested match, the Black Cats took the lead in the second half, and despite Newcastle’s efforts to respond, the game ended with Sunderland’s resilience earning them all three points.
The only goal of the match came in the 46th minute when Woltemade, the £69 million summer signing from Stuttgart, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Attempting to clear a cross from Sunderland’s Mukiele, the German striker accidentally headed the ball past his own goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, who had no chance of stopping it. It was a calamitous moment for Woltemade, but one that will be remembered by Sunderland fans for a long time.
This victory marked a significant achievement for Sunderland, who are now unbeaten in their last ten league encounters against Newcastle, a record that stretches back several seasons. It also pushed them up to seventh place in the Premier League standings, four points ahead of their rivals, who are languishing in 12th.

Newcastle struggled to find any rhythm throughout the game. They had a few attempts, but none of them seriously troubled Sunderland's defense. Despite manager Eddie Howe making substitutions in an attempt to turn the game around, his team simply couldn't break down Sunderland’s resolute backline. The Black Cats, under the guidance of Regis Le Bris, were organized and disciplined, and their efforts in the derby were rewarded.
Sunderland's defensive performance was particularly impressive, with Dan Ballard playing a crucial role at the back and being named Player of the Match for his efforts. The home side’s attacking play, though limited, was full of intent, with the team creating a few chances in the first half, including a header from Ballard that nearly broke the deadlock.
For Newcastle, it was another disappointing result in what has been a tough campaign. Their inability to respond to the early second-half setback highlights ongoing issues in their attack, with Woltemade's mistake summing up the team's struggles on the day. The Magpies’ wide players, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon, were ineffective in providing support to Woltemade, and the midfielders failed to make the necessary runs to support the striker.
Sunderland fans were in full voice as their team held on to claim the win, while Newcastle, now with four consecutive league losses on Wearside, will need to regroup quickly if they are to turn their season around.
With the win, Sunderland now sits comfortably in the top half of the table, while Newcastle faces another tough challenge ahead as they search for form. The Wearside derby once again proved to be a memorable occasion, with Sunderland coming out on top after a nervy but deserved victory.
