The End of Fondation Maman Dion Marks a Quiet Goodbye to 20 Years of Giving

There’s some emotional news coming out of Quebec right now, especially for anyone who has followed charitable work in education over the years. Fondation Maman Dion, a well-known organization dedicated to helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds succeed in school, has announced that it will officially cease its activities at the end of December 2025. After nearly two decades of service, this chapter is coming to a close.

The announcement was shared publicly through the foundation’s website and social media platforms, and it was made with clear regret. The message explained that operations will stop after years of supporting young students who needed a helping hand, particularly during the back-to-school period. For many families, the foundation’s help had become a quiet but powerful presence in their lives.

Fondation Maman Dion was founded in 2005 by Thérèse Tanguay Dion, widely known as “Maman Dion,” the mother of 14 children, including international music star Céline Dion. Her vision was simple but deeply rooted in compassion. The foundation’s mission was focused on supporting education for children aged 5 to 16 from low-income backgrounds. This support often came in very practical forms: basic school supplies, clothing suitable for school, and even eyeglasses for children who needed them. These gestures may sound small on paper, but for thousands of students, they made a real difference in confidence, comfort, and the ability to learn.

The foundation was led for many years by Claudette Dion, one of Thérèse’s daughters and Céline Dion’s older sister. She served as both executive director and spokesperson. According to her, the decision to close the foundation was a painful one. It was explained that the sale of the house in Charlemagne that had long housed the organization played a key role. Moving the foundation elsewhere simply did not feel possible anymore. Importantly, it was stressed that this decision was not driven by financial trouble.

In her words, the foundation will always remain close to her heart. That sentiment was echoed in the foundation’s farewell message, which included heartfelt thanks to sponsors, partners, donors, and volunteers. Their collective efforts were credited with improving the lives of thousands of students over the years.

Thérèse Tanguay Dion passed away in 2020 at the age of 92, but her legacy clearly lived on through this foundation. While Fondation Maman Dion may be closing its doors, the impact it had on education, dignity, and opportunity for vulnerable children will not be forgotten anytime soon.
