The War Between the Land and the Sea Review — Doctor Who Goes Eco

A new Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea , has landed with a bang, marking a fresh chapter in the universe created by Russell T Davies. Known for his work on Doctor Who and It's a Sin , Davies dives deep into environmental themes with this new five-part series, which launched on December 7. Starring Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Jemma Redgrave, the show takes a "tougher tone" and explores humanity's response to an ancient species rising from the sea, triggering a global crisis. But this isn't just another sci-fi thriller. It's a high-stakes drama that pulls the audience into an eco-thriller that tackles real-world concerns.

The series begins with UNIT agent Barclay, played by Tovey, whose mundane life is turned upside down when the mysterious species known as Homo Aqua emerges from the ocean. This marks the beginning of a battle for survival, as the ancient creatures rise, and humanity is thrust into chaos. The show is driven by the mysterious figure, Salt (Mbatha-Raw), who steps into the human world during a critical summit on the River Thames, with the military trying to keep order as the crisis escalates.

Davies, originally from Swansea, says the inspiration for the series came from his personal connection to the sea and his growing concerns about the state of the environment. In his words, the show stews in the idea of "the awful things we're doing to the sea" and imagines what might happen if humanity were faced with the consequences of our actions. The story, although set in a world familiar to Doctor Who fans, takes a step away from the Doctor and focuses on the human side of things, showing how people cope when there's no safety net provided by the Time Lord.

In true Davies style, The War Between the Land and the Sea blends suspense with moments of human emotion, including romance and action-packed chases. But underneath it all, there’s a deep message about the impact of human actions on the environment and the monsters we create in the process. It's not just another thriller—it's an urgent reflection on the world around us. Whether you're a fan of Doctor Who or new to this universe, this series promises to keep you hooked, making the question of how humanity will respond to an environmental crisis both thrilling and deeply personal.
