Tomlin Shares Cautious Update on T.J. Watt’s Health
So, here’s the latest on T.J. Watt, and it’s definitely something that grabbed everyone’s attention this week. The Steelers put out a statement on Thursday confirming that Watt had been hospitalized after experiencing discomfort at the team facility on Wednesday. It was described as a lung-related issue that needed further medical evaluation, and because of that, he’s been held out of practice and is now questionable for Monday night’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins.
Coach Mike Tomlin spoke about the situation after Thursday’s practice, and you could tell he was choosing his words carefully. He made it very clear that he’s not a medical expert, so he didn’t want to get ahead of what doctors are still figuring out. According to Tomlin, Watt felt discomfort at the facility and was immediately taken to be checked out. Whatever the doctors saw was concerning enough for them to keep him overnight in the hospital. Tomlin said the medical team is continuing with tests and procedures, and the plan for the afternoon involved more evaluations that should give everyone a clearer picture of what’s going on.

Even though the details are limited, Tomlin did say he spoke with Watt the night before, and Watt was described as “comfortable,” which at least gives a little bit of reassurance. Still, as of now, anything regarding his availability for Monday night is completely uncertain. Tomlin emphasized that what happens during the next round of testing will heavily influence that decision.
When Tomlin was pressed about what exactly caused the discomfort, he admitted he wasn’t sure. He mentioned that at one point Watt had been in the cafeteria, and that’s when the situation was first brought to his attention. But nothing leading up to this suggested any ongoing health concerns. Watt wasn’t dealing with any issues that would have landed him on the injury report in recent days, either during the previous game or in the time after it. So whatever happened, it came on unexpectedly.
Right now, everything is on pause until more information comes back from the doctors. It’s one of those situations where the team, the coaches, and the fans have no choice but to wait and hope for the best. And with someone as impactful as Watt, both on the field and in the locker room, the concern is understandable. For now, all eyes are on the upcoming medical updates, and the Steelers will adjust their plans as soon as they know more.
