Tragedy in North Carolina as Cessna C550 Crash Claims Greg Biffle and Family
A heartbreaking aviation tragedy has unfolded in North Carolina, where a Cessna C550 business jet crashed while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport, and it is now believed that former NASCAR star Greg Biffle and members of his family were among the seven people who lost their lives. The incident happened around 10:20 in the morning local time, and the shock of it is still being felt across the racing world and beyond.
According to officials, the aircraft had taken off just minutes earlier before returning to the airport for reasons that are still unclear. While approaching the runway, the jet went down on the east end and was immediately engulfed in flames. By the time airport director John Ferguson arrived at the scene, the aircraft was already fully on fire, leaving very little chance for survival. Emergency crews rushed in, but the destruction was severe, and debris was scattered across the runway.

Authorities have said that confirmation of the victims is complicated due to the intense post-crash fire. However, people on the ground confirmed that Greg Biffle was among those who boarded the plane. The aircraft itself was reportedly owned by a private company associated with Biffle. A close family friend, professional baseball player Mitchell Garret, shared an emotional message online, stating that Biffle, his wife Cristina, and their children Emma and Ryder were on their way to spend the afternoon with him when the crash occurred.
Tributes quickly began to pour in. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein described the news as heartbreaking, highlighting not just Biffle’s success on the track but also his character off it. It was noted that he had stepped up to help western North Carolina communities after Hurricane Helene, showing compassion beyond his racing career.
Greg Biffle was widely respected in motorsport. Over a career that spanned two decades, he won championships in both the NASCAR Truck Series and the Xfinity Series and secured 19 victories at the Cup Series level. Known by fans as “The Biff,” he was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023. Even after scaling back his racing career, his love for competition never faded, and he famously returned to win a one-off race in 2019.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched a full investigation and is sending a specialized team to examine the wreckage and determine what caused the crash. Until then, Statesville Regional Airport remains closed as debris is cleared and evidence is preserved.
As the investigation begins, the focus remains on remembering the lives lost. What happened on that runway was not just an aviation accident, but a devastating loss for a family, a community, and a sport that Greg Biffle helped shape for years.
