Tragedy Strikes Brown University During Final Exams
What began as an ordinary exam afternoon at Brown University turned into a scene of shock and fear after a deadly shooting unfolded inside an engineering building on campus. During what should have been a focused and stressful but routine time for students sitting final exams, chaos was suddenly introduced when a gunman entered a first-floor classroom in the Barus and Holley engineering building.
It has been confirmed that two Brown University students were killed, and nine others were injured in the attack. Police were called to the campus shortly after 4 p.m. local time, as emergency alerts were sent out urging students and staff to lock doors, stay silent, and shelter in place. At the time, end-of-year engineering exams were underway, with classrooms filled with students concentrating on their work when the shooting occurred.

Authorities said the suspect is a male, believed to be in his 30s, who was dressed in black clothing. After the shooting, he escaped the building on foot and remains at large. Surveillance footage has since been released showing a person of interest leaving the engineering building and walking along nearby streets, though the individual’s face is not visible. The firearm used in the attack has not been recovered, and police have not yet confirmed how the shooter gained access to the classroom. While the outer doors of the building were unlocked due to multiple exams taking place, the exam rooms themselves were supposed to require badge access.
As night fell, the university and surrounding neighborhoods remained under lockdown. Streets that are usually lively were left eerily quiet, with law enforcement officers escorting students out of some buildings to safer locations. Several injured students were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where multiple patients were reported to be in critical but stable condition.
Brown University President Christina Paxson described the incident as a deeply tragic day for the university, acknowledging the fear and anxiety spreading across the campus community. Students were urged to remain sheltered and to contact loved ones to let them know they were safe. Many students shared stories of hiding in dorm rooms, shops, or campus buildings for hours, shaken by the reality that such violence had reached their university.
Federal agencies, including the FBI and the Secret Service, have joined local authorities in the investigation. As the search for the suspect continues, the Brown community is left mourning the loss of two students, supporting the injured, and grappling with the trauma of an event that has forever marked the campus.
