Villa’s Stunning Fightback Steals a Seven-Goal Thriller at Brighton

What a wild Premier League night it turned out to be at the Amex Stadium, where Aston Villa battled back from two goals down to beat Brighton 4–3 in a dramatic, breathless contest. It was one of those matches where you almost couldn’t look away, because every few minutes something unexpected was happening.

Brighton actually looked in complete command early on. Their start was sharp, confident, and full of energy. Jan Paul van Hecke set the tone by reacting quickest inside the box, scrambling the ball over the line after a corner caused chaos for stand-in goalkeeper Marco Bizot. With Emi Martínez ruled out just before kick-off, Bizot had been thrown into the action, and the early pressure clearly unsettled him.

Brighton then doubled their lead thanks to a move that began smoothly but ended in pure misfortune for Villa. Jack Hinshelwood tried to square the ball into the middle, but instead it took a heavy deflection off Pau Torres and bounced straight into the Villa net. At 2–0, it really felt as if the game was Brighton’s to control.

But Villa refused to fade. And this is where Ollie Watkins stepped forward, ending his long goal drought in the most emphatic way. His first goal came from classic striker instinct — sliding in at just the right moment to finish Ian Maatsen’s delivery. Then, deep into first-half stoppage time, he latched onto a clever ball over the top, raced away, and fired home a superb equaliser. In just a few minutes, Brighton’s comfortable lead had completely vanished.

Suddenly Villa were the team with all the momentum. That shift continued into the second half when Amadou Onana arrived at the far post to turn in a corner and give Villa the lead for the first time. Brighton tried to respond, and both teams traded chances, but Villa’s confidence was growing with every attack.

Then came a crucial moment: substitute Donyell Malen, on the pitch for barely a few seconds, reacted fastest after Bizot pushed out a header. Malen smashed in Villa’s fourth, stretching the lead to 4–2 and leaving Brighton stunned.

Even then, the drama wasn’t over. Van Hecke produced another smart finish late on to bring Brighton back within one goal and the home crowd to its feet again. Brighton pushed hard for an equaliser, and Bizot had to redeem himself with a brilliant save from Danny Welbeck to keep Villa ahead. But in the end, Villa held firm.

With this victory — their sixth in a row in all competitions — Villa moved up to third in the table, showcasing resilience, belief, and a striker rediscovering his touch. Brighton, despite the defeat, showed plenty of quality and fight, but the night belonged to Villa and their remarkable comeback.
