Christmas Day has finally arrived, and while the city slows down to celebrate, it’s also a day when many people suddenly realize they need one more item, a place to go, or something fun to do outside the house. As expected, a lot of services and businesses are shut down for the holiday, but not everything goes quiet. If you’re wondering what’s open and what’s firmly closed today, here’s a clear picture of how Christmas Day is shaping up across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
To start with the closures, most essential public services are not operating today. Government buildings, banks, Canada Post locations, and ICBC offices have all been closed in observance of the holiday. Libraries are also largely shut down, with most Vancouver Public Library branches closed for the day. Locations like Jak’s Liquor, John B Liquor Store in Coquitlam, Burrard Liquor Store on Burrard Street, and Crosstown Liquor Store on Abbott Street are welcoming customers, though hours may vary.
For those looking to enjoy the day rather than shop, there’s some good news. A number of popular attractions remain open and are adding a festive touch to Christmas Day. The Vancouver Aquarium is hosting its Holiday Splash, complete with seasonal surprises like “Scuba Claus.” Outdoor fun is also available at the Robson Square ice rink, while several light displays are glowing across the region, including Lights at Lafarge, Lights of Hope at St. Paul’s Hospital, and the Dundarave Festival of Lights in West Vancouver. Skiers and snow lovers can also head to Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain, or Mount Seymour for select activities.
Movie lovers aren’t left out either, as Cineplex theatres are open, making Christmas Day movies a popular option once again. Overall, while much of the city is taking a well-earned break, there are still enough options available to turn Christmas Day into something memorable—just with a little extra planning.
