Yellow Rain Warnings in Place as UK Faces Unsettled Weather

The UK is bracing for more wet and windy conditions this week, as yellow weather warnings for rain have been issued across parts of England and Wales. The Met Office has warned that the unsettled weather is set to continue through the end of the week, with further heavy rainfall likely to affect travel and daily routines.

Today, many regions will see periods of heavy rain and gusty winds, though southeast England is expected to remain dry until after dark. In particular, southwest England and south Wales are under a Yellow Warning for rain until late this evening. Across these areas, rainfall totals of 10 to 20 millimeters are expected quite widely, but the high ground of Dartmoor and the hills of south Wales could see 40 to 60 millimeters. This is significant because such heavy rain on already saturated ground may lead to flooding and travel disruption. Drivers are being strongly advised not to attempt crossing flooded roads, as even a small depth of moving water can carry a vehicle and conceal hidden hazards.

Chief Forecaster Rebekah Hicks explained that low-pressure systems are driving this unsettled weather. Periods of rain are expected to be heaviest over high ground in the west, accompanied by strong winds, with some coastal areas facing gale-force gusts. Travel disruption is likely, particularly in the regions already affected by recent wet weather.

Looking ahead to Thursday, conditions will continue to be unsettled. While the north may start the day with some bright spells, heavy rain is forecast to spread northwards through the day. The highest rainfall totals will again be seen in south England and south Wales, with gusts over 50 mph expected in exposed coastal areas, which could worsen impacts. Yellow warnings remain in place across southern counties of England as well as southwest England and south Wales.

Friday will bring a brief respite, with a mix of sunshine and showers, mainly in northern areas, where hail and even some thunder are possible. However, this calm will be short-lived, as another low-pressure system is expected over the weekend. This could bring further heavy rain, particularly to the southwest and south Wales, areas already sensitive to flooding.

For Christmas week, high pressure is forecast to build, bringing drier and colder conditions. Overnight frosts and patches of fog are likely, but significant cold or snow seems less probable at this stage. While wintry showers could occur in some eastern regions, it is too early to confirm details for any particular day.

With the current wet spell, it is essential for residents and travelers to stay alert, plan journeys carefully, and keep up to date with the latest forecasts from the Met Office. Weather awareness is being strongly encouraged across the UK as the week of unsettled conditions continues.
