Anthony Joshua Retirement Video Goes Viral — But the Truth Tells a Very Different Story
Over the past few days, social media has been flooded with an emotional video that appears to show Anthony Joshua announcing his retirement from professional boxing. In the clip, the former heavyweight champion is seen looking visibly distressed at what seems to be a press conference, claiming that he has decided to walk away from the sport following a tragic car accident that killed two of his closest associates. For many fans, the video was shocking, heartbreaking, and instantly believable. But as it turns out, the entire clip is fake.
According to fact-checkers, the viral video was not a real announcement at all. It was revealed to have been carefully doctored using artificial intelligence. The footage was stitched together from older press conference clips, while an AI-generated voice-over was added to make it sound as though Joshua was speaking about the recent tragedy and announcing his retirement. The end result was convincing enough to fool hundreds of thousands of viewers online.

In the fake video, Joshua is portrayed as saying that he wished he had died in the crash instead of his friends, and that the grief now prevents him from stepping into the ring. Those words were never spoken by him. Investigators found that the opening part of the video was taken from a real press conference Joshua held back in August 2022, after his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. His mouth movements were then manipulated to match the fabricated audio.
What is true, however, is that Anthony Joshua was recently involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria. On December 29, a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and his entourage crashed into a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Two key members of his team — his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami — were tragically killed. Joshua survived the crash with injuries and was taken to hospital, where he was later discharged on December 31.
Since the accident, Joshua has not made any public statements or held any press conferences. This fact alone strongly contradicts the claims made in the viral clip. Authorities have since charged the driver involved in the crash, and investigations are ongoing.
The fake retirement video serves as a powerful reminder of how easily misinformation can spread, especially when emotions are high and advanced AI tools are involved. While Anthony Joshua is undoubtedly grieving the loss of two close friends, no official announcement about his retirement has been made. For now, the story of him quitting boxing exists only in a manipulated video — not in reality.
