Bears Fall Short Against Lions in Final Game, Finish Season 11-6
The Chicago Bears ended their regular season on a bitter note with a 19-16 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Soldier Field. In a game that came down to the wire, the Lions' Jake Bates kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired, delivering a heartbreaking defeat to the Bears.
Chicago’s season had been filled with dramatic finishes, and it seemed only fitting that this game would follow suit. The Bears started the game sluggishly, with their offense failing to score a point through the first three quarters. The Lions, on the other hand, dominated the game’s early stages, taking a 16-0 lead heading into the final quarter thanks to a series of field goals and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Jahmyr Gibbs.
However, the Bears weren’t done yet. Caleb Williams, Chicago's quarterback, sparked a late rally with a 25-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jahdae Walker just 44 seconds into the fourth quarter. This touchdown not only put the Bears on the board but also made Williams the team's all-time single-season passing yards leader, surpassing Erik Kramer's 1995 record of 3,838 yards. The Bears converted the two-point try to make it 16-8.

With momentum building, Williams and the Bears offense struck again, marching 88 yards downfield to score another touchdown, this time a one-yard pass to tight end Colston Loveland. A daring two-point conversion grab by Cole Kmet tied the game at 16-all with 5:28 left.
Both teams exchanged possessions in a tense final few minutes. The Lions' defense stepped up when it mattered most, forcing the Bears to punt after a three-and-out. Detroit took over at their own 37-yard line with 1:41 remaining. Goff, who had completed 27 of 42 passes for 331 yards and a touchdown, quickly moved the Lions into Bears' territory, connecting with Amon-Ra St. Brown for a crucial 26-yard pass. This set up Bates for the game-winning field goal.
Williams finished the day with 212 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, falling just 58 yards short of becoming the first 4,000-yard passer in Bears history. Despite the loss, the Bears secured the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs due to a loss by the Eagles to the Commanders, meaning they will host the Green Bay Packers next week.
The Lions' defense had a significant impact, holding the Bears' running game to just 65 yards, their lowest total of the season. Bates had also been solid, hitting four field goals, including the game-winner, and proving to be Detroit's difference-maker on the day.
While the Bears' season ended with disappointment, they will head into the playoffs with a strong 11-6 record and a chance to bounce back as they prepare to face their NFC North rivals.
