How Playing Pablo Escobar Changed Andrés Parra’s Body and Mind Forever
When people talk about Pablo Escobar on television, they often focus on the violence, the power, and the shadow he left behind. But behind that iconic portrayal in Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal is a very human story about the actor who played him, Andrés Parra, and how that role quietly changed his life in ways few people expected.

In a recent and very honest conversation, Parra looked back at the moment that pushed him to completely rethink his health. Before stepping into Escobar’s shoes, it was admitted that his physical condition had reached a worrying point. Poor eating habits, anxiety, and a lack of discipline had taken their toll. The wake-up call came from a harsh comment he heard secondhand from a producer, who allegedly said he was too overweight and useful only for the scene where Escobar dies. That sentence, though painful, was taken as a turning point rather than an insult.
From that moment on, a drastic change was set in motion. To meet the demands of the role, Parra was placed under a strict nutritional plan with professional guidance. What followed was not just weight loss, but a complete lifestyle reset. His weight dropped from more than 112 kilos before casting, to around 96 kilos during filming, and eventually down to nearly 70 kilos after the project ended. Once the first kilos were lost, it was said that the motivation stayed. The taste for a healthier life didn’t disappear when the cameras stopped rolling.
But the physical transformation was only part of the story. Parra also addressed long-standing rumors about his mental health after the series ended. While it was acknowledged that the role was emotionally exhausting, especially as filming stretched from four months to nearly ten under intense political and social pressure, the idea that he “went crazy” was firmly denied. What happened, according to him, was extreme burnout. The emotional weight of portraying such a controversial figure was carried daily, and eventually, rest became unavoidable.
He also spoke openly about his past relationship with food, describing it as an addiction fueled by anxiety. At his heaviest, his weight reportedly reached 123 kilos, supported by days of consuming up to 12,000 calories. Late-night eating, secrecy, and emotional dependence on ultra-processed food were part of his routine. Today, that chapter is seen with clarity rather than shame.
Now, Parra maintains a stable weight and a clear boundary with his old habits. The pursuit of power or money has been replaced with a simpler goal: emotional balance, physical health, and peace of mind. Ironically, by portraying one of the most powerful men in history, Andrés Parra learned that real strength comes from taking care of oneself.
