Human Remains Found in Search for Missing Belgian Backpacker in Tasmania

More than two years after a young Belgian backpacker vanished in Tasmania’s rugged wilderness, a discovery deep in the bush has reopened a case that many feared would never find answers.

Human remains have been found near Philosopher Falls, close to Cradle Mountain, during a renewed search for Céline Cremer. She was 31 years old when she set out on what was believed to be a short walk in June 2023 and never returned. Her disappearance triggered an intense and emotional search across one of Australia’s most remote and unforgiving landscapes.

At the time, police, emergency crews, helicopters, drones and specialist rescue teams scoured the area. Cremer’s car was located in the car park near the falls, but despite weeks of searching through dense forest, steep terrain and extreme weather, no sign of her was found. Authorities later said conditions were so severe that survival would have been unlikely and the official search was eventually suspended.

But the story did not end there.

Driven by unanswered questions, Cremer’s family and volunteers continued to search. A privately led effort resumed late last year and during that search, her mobile phone was discovered in bushland away from the main track. That find reignited hope that the mystery could finally be resolved.

Now, during continued volunteer efforts, a bushwalker has located human remains in a remote area not far from where Cremer was last believed to be walking. Police say the remains have been reviewed by a pathologist and confirmed to be human. Formal forensic testing is still underway to determine identity.

Cremer’s family in Belgium has been informed. For them, this moment carries both deep pain and the possibility of long-awaited clarity. Investigators have acknowledged how distressing this development is, but also how important it could be in providing answers after years of uncertainty.

This case matters far beyond one family. It highlights the real dangers of wilderness travel, even on seemingly simple walks and the sheer scale and difficulty of searching remote terrain. It also speaks to the power of persistence and community, with volunteers refusing to give up when official efforts ended.

As forensic work continues, the focus now turns to confirmation and to understanding what happened in those final moments. For many watching around the world, this story is a sobering reminder of how quickly adventure can turn into tragedy.

Stay with us as this investigation continues and keep watching for updates as authorities work to bring clarity and closure to a case that has haunted Tasmania for more than two years.
