Linda Brown Found Dead After Days of Searching Chicago Lakefront

Linda Brown, a 53 year old special education teacher with Chicago Public Schools, has been found dead in Lake Michigan. Her body was recovered Monday morning along the city’s South Side lakefront, not far from where search teams had been focusing their efforts for days. The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed her identity later the same day.
Brown had been missing since the early morning hours of January third. According to her family, she left home overnight and never returned. When she missed a scheduled appointment later that morning and stopped responding to calls and messages, loved ones knew something was wrong and reported her missing.

As the days went on, concern grew quickly. Police later located her car near 35th Street and Lake Park Avenue, close to the lakefront. Surveillance video showed Brown alone, parking her vehicle around three in the morning and walking toward a pedestrian bridge that leads directly to the lake. That image became the last confirmed sighting of her.
Volunteers, family members and friends spent hours combing nearby beaches, parks and shoreline areas. Many of them knew Brown personally. Others came simply to help. She was described as a dedicated educator, someone deeply committed to her students and a trusted presence in her school community. Her sudden disappearance left colleagues, parents and students shaken.
Brown’s husband had shared that she had previously struggled with mental health challenges, but emphasized she had never gone missing before. Throughout the search, the family urged the public to focus on helping rather than speculating, holding on to hope even as the days passed without answers.
Now, the focus turns to understanding what happened. Authorities say the circumstances surrounding how Brown entered the water are still under investigation. Her cause of death has not yet been released and an autopsy is expected to provide more clarity in the coming days.
