Manchester United Enter Race for Ronaldo’s Portugal Teammate
There’s a new transfer story picking up momentum around Manchester United, and it’s one that feels very familiar if you’ve followed the club closely over the years. Under Ruben Amorim, United are reportedly exploring the market for midfield reinforcements, and the name now being talked about is Rúben Neves, a Portugal international and current teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo.
This situation has been driven largely by necessity. United have been hit with a significant setback after Bruno Fernandes picked up an injury, even though his return is expected by late January. In the meantime, the midfield has looked thin. Casemiro is approaching the final six months of his contract, Manuel Ugarte’s form has dipped, and options have become so limited that defender Lisandro Martínez has been used in midfield in recent matches. That alone has underlined how urgent the issue has become.

Because of that, attention has reportedly turned to Neves, who is currently playing for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Despite moving away from the Premier League in 2023, Neves has remained a high-level performer and an important figure for Portugal’s national team. He continues to line up regularly alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and has been trusted as a starter, often partnering Vitinha in midfield. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, his role under Portugal coach Roberto Martínez is expected to remain central.
What makes this potential move especially interesting is the timing. Neves is entering the final months of his contract with Al Hilal, and while the Saudi club would prefer to keep him, reports suggest they could be open to offers if the player decides it’s time to move on. A fee in the region of £15 million has been mentioned, which would be seen as a bargain for a player of his experience and quality.
Manchester United, however, are far from alone. Several European heavyweights are said to be monitoring the situation closely. Atlético Madrid, Juventus, and Bayern Munich have all reportedly held informal talks with Neves’ representatives, and even Real Madrid have been loosely linked. That level of interest suggests his future is still very much up in the air.
For United, the appeal is obvious. Neves knows the Premier League well from his time at Wolves, brings leadership, composure, and long-range passing, and would offer immediate stability in a midfield that currently feels patched together. Whether a move happens in January or is pushed to the summer remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Manchester United have officially joined a very competitive race, and this is a transfer story that’s only just getting started.
