Nygren Saves Celtic as Falkirk Push Champions to the Edge
Good evening and we’re turning to the Scottish Premiership now, where Celtic were made to work very hard for a narrow but crucial win away at Falkirk.
This finished Falkirk nil, Celtic one and while the scoreline looks routine on paper, the story of this match was anything but comfortable for the reigning champions.
Celtic came into this game knowing the pressure was firmly on. Hearts had already won earlier in the evening, which meant anything less than three points would have felt like a major setback in the title race. Falkirk, meanwhile, were playing with confidence, intensity and very little to lose in front of a lively home crowd.
From the opening minutes, it was Falkirk who looked sharper. They pressed Celtic high up the pitch, disrupted their rhythm and created the better chances. For long spells in the first half, Celtic struggled to settle. Passes went astray, the build-up was slow and Falkirk kept finding space, especially out wide.

Then, just before half-time, came the decisive moment. Celtic won a corner and Benjamin Nygren rose to meet it, guiding the ball into the net. Against the run of play, Celtic were suddenly in front. It was a reminder of how ruthless top teams can be, even when they’re not at their best.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Celtic tightened up defensively but never fully took control. Falkirk kept pushing, believing an equaliser was there for the taking. They came agonisingly close late on, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Kasper Schmeichel, who had to be alert after defensive mistakes in front of him.
At the final whistle, there was relief more than celebration from the Celtic players. They had survived a real test. This win lifts them into second place on goal difference and keeps them six points behind leaders Hearts, who continue to set the pace at the top.
But this performance also raises questions. Celtic are winning games, yes, but not always convincingly. Their manager has already hinted that reinforcements are needed and nights like this only add to that pressure. Being outplayed for long periods by a newly promoted side is not something the champions will be comfortable with.
For Falkirk, despite the disappointment, there was plenty to take away. They matched Celtic stride for stride and showed they belong at this level. On another night, the result could easily have been different.
So Celtic take the points, the title race stays alive and the tension builds. That’s all from us on this one, a tight win, a big moment and plenty still to play for.
