Ovechkin Makes NHL History Again at 40, Even in a Tough Loss
Good evening, everyone. We begin tonight with a moment of hockey history and it belongs once again to Alex Ovechkin.
On Sunday night in Nashville, the Washington Capitals fell 3–2 to the Predators. But even in defeat, the spotlight found number eight. Ovechkin scored a power-play goal early in the first period and with that single shot, he added another chapter to one of the greatest careers the NHL has ever seen.
That goal gave Ovechkin his 20th of the season. And here’s the part that makes history. This is now the 21st season of his career in which he has scored at least 20 goals. No one else has done that more than 21 times. Only one player in NHL history has done it more. That’s Gordie Howe, with 22.

Let that sink in for a moment. Ovechkin is now just one season away from tying a record set by a player whose career began before most of us were born. And he’s doing it at age 40, in a league that is faster, younger and more demanding than ever.
This goal also pushes Ovechkin’s career total to 917. He already passed Wayne Gretzky last season to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, something many once believed would never happen. And yet, here he is, still scoring, still producing, still changing what we think is possible for an aging superstar.
What makes this even more remarkable is the consistency. From his rookie season, when he exploded onto the scene with over 50 goals, to shortened seasons, injuries and changing teammates, Ovechkin has never dipped below 20 goals in a full year. Not once. Other legends had peaks and valleys. Ovechkin just kept climbing.
The Capitals didn’t get the result they wanted on the scoreboard and that matters in a tight playoff race. But moments like this go beyond one game. They remind fans, players and the entire sport that we are watching a once-in-a-lifetime career unfold in real time.
As the season continues, the question isn’t whether Alex Ovechkin will slow down. It’s how much more history he plans to make before he’s done.
That’s the latest from the NHL tonight. We’ll keep watching, because with Ovechkin, the next milestone is never far away.
