Pa O’Dwyer Remembered: Strength Legend, Father, and the Limerick Lion
Some news hits harder than others, and this is one of those moments that has left the entire strongman world, and especially Ireland, in deep shock. It has been confirmed that Pa O’Dwyer, known to many as the “Limerick Lion,” has passed away at the age of 40. The news was shared with heartbreak by Giants Live, and since then, tributes have poured in from athletes, fans, and communities far beyond the world of strength sports.
Pa O’Dwyer was widely respected as one of Ireland’s greatest ever strongmen, but what stands out just as much as his titles was the man he was away from the platform. He was described time and again as a true giant of a human being, not just in size or power, but in personality, humour, and warmth. Wherever he went, laughter followed, and anyone who crossed paths with him usually walked away with a story they would tell for years.

Raised in Rathkeale, Pa grew up working on a farm before spending his early twenties working on the roads. It was later that weight training became his focus, and from there, his rise in strength sports began. That journey took him to the very top. He won Ireland’s Strongest Man an unprecedented five times and made history in 2018 by becoming the first Irishman to claim the UK’s Strongest Man title. His consistency and power earned him regular appearances on the Giants Live circuit and saw him qualify for the World’s Strongest Man competition in 2020, representing Ireland on the biggest stage.
Yet, despite all those achievements, it was often said that the title Pa cherished most was simply “Dad.” He leaves behind his three children, Sienna, Rocco, and Freddy, along with his partner Layna. His love for his family was spoken about openly and often, and it was clear to everyone who knew him that they were the centre of his world.
Beyond competition, Pa became a fan favourite through his interviews, social media presence, and television appearances. His natural humour and down-to-earth attitude made him relatable, and he helped bring new fans into the sport just by being himself. Strength, laughter, and kindness were always carried together by him.
With the family’s permission, a GoFundMe has been set up to assist with memorial arrangements and to support his children through the difficult days ahead. As tributes continue to be shared, one message remains consistent across the entire strongman community: Pa O’Dwyer will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Rest in power, Limerick Lion.
