Powerful 6.5-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Southern Mexico Near Acapulco
A powerful earthquake shook parts of southern Mexico early Friday morning, and it was strong enough to be felt across a wide area, especially near the coastal city of Acapulco. According to data from the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 6.5, making it a significant seismic event that immediately drew attention from scientists, officials, and residents alike.
The quake struck at around 7:58 a.m. Central time, with its epicenter located just a few miles northwest of Rancho Viejo, a mountainous area above Acapulco. The shaking was described as strong in areas closest to the epicenter, while lighter shaking was felt farther away. Maps released by seismologists showed regions experiencing a shake intensity of four or greater, which is classified as “light” on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, though the tremor may have been noticed even beyond those mapped zones.
