Snow and Ice Set to Disrupt Travel as the UK Faces a Bitter Start to 2026

Power cuts are also considered a real risk in the worst-affected areas, particularly in parts of eastern and northern Scotland where blizzard-like conditions may develop. Vehicles could be left stranded if visibility drops and snowdrifts build up, something the Met Office has strongly cautioned against.
Cold Arctic air is sweeping across the UK, dragging temperatures well below the seasonal average. According to forecasters, this cold spell could persist into next week, with further snow showers likely and additional weather warnings expected to be issued as conditions evolve. Winds are also forecast to pick up in places, increasing the chance of drifting snow and making already difficult travel even more challenging.

Carrying essentials such as warm clothing, water, blankets, and basic car equipment like an ice scraper has been strongly advised. Amber cold health alerts are in force across England, with warnings that low temperatures could lead to a rise in illness and deaths, particularly among older people and those with existing health conditions. People are being encouraged to check in on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours, and to ensure homes are kept as warm as safely possible.
