The NFL Playoffs Are Here as Wild Card Weekend Sets the Stage for 2026
And just like that, the long and grinding 18-week NFL regular season has wrapped up, and now the real drama begins. The 2026 NFL playoffs have officially arrived, bringing with them all the tension, excitement, and win-or-go-home pressure that fans wait for all year. The regular season ended in fitting fashion, with division titles and playoff spots hanging in the balance right up until the final whistle.
One of the biggest moments came on Sunday night, when the AFC North title was decided in a thriller between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers escaped with a narrow 26-24 victory, but the game turned on a single, heartbreaking moment. Ravens kicker Tyler Loop missed a 44-yard field goal that would have sealed the division for Baltimore. Instead, the door was left open, and Pittsburgh walked through it. As a result, the AFC North crown was claimed by the Steelers, and their playoff path was set.

With that win, Aaron Rodgers and Pittsburgh earned the right to host a wild-card matchup against the Houston Texans. That game will cap off Wild Card Weekend on Monday night, Jan. 12, making it the final opening-round showdown of the postseason. It’s a prime-time stage, and one that feels fitting for a Steelers team that found its way back to the top of the division after years of waiting.
Wild Card Weekend itself is spread across three days and six games, starting on Saturday and ending Monday night. The opening game will see the Carolina Panthers host the Los Angeles Rams, followed by a classic NFC North clash between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. Sunday brings a full slate, with matchups featuring the Bills, Jaguars, 49ers, Eagles, Chargers, and Patriots. Every game carries its own storyline, and every team knows there’s no margin for error anymore.
Beyond the wild-card round, the playoff format remains straightforward but ruthless. After this weekend, the remaining teams will be reseeded. The No. 1 seeds — the Denver Broncos in the AFC and the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC — will host the lowest remaining seeds in the divisional round. The other two survivors in each conference will face off based on seeding, with everything leading toward conference championships and, ultimately, the Super Bowl.
Divisional round games are already locked into the calendar, with two matchups scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17, and two more on Sunday, Jan. 18. By then, the field will be smaller, the pressure even higher, and the road to the Super Bowl much clearer.
For now, though, it’s all about Wild Card Weekend. The playoffs are here, the bracket is set, and the chase for a championship has officially begun.
