Tragic Discovery Ends Search for Missing Snorkeller at Ledge Point
A heartbreaking update has emerged from Western Australia’s coastline, where human remains have been found during the search for a snorkeller who went missing off Ledge Point earlier this month. What began as a routine New Year’s Day outing has now turned into a devastating outcome for family, friends, and the local community.
The man, believed to be 32 years old, was snorkelling for crayfish with three friends at Ledge Point Beach, around 100 kilometres north of Perth. It was described as a group dive, something many people do regularly along that stretch of coast. However, sometime during the afternoon, he became separated from the others. When the group resurfaced and realised he had not returned, the alarm was raised at about 3pm.
From that moment, a large-scale search effort was launched. Volunteer marine rescue crews, local fishermen, and water police all joined in, scanning the ocean and nearby coastline. Boats and aircraft were deployed, and hopes remained high through the first night that he might still be found. Despite the intensity of the effort, no trace of him was located, and after more than 24 hours, the search was scaled back on January 2.

For days afterward, uncertainty lingered. Friends and family continued to hold onto hope, sharing messages within the local community and asking anyone who had been at Ledge Point that day to come forward with even the smallest detail. It was unclear whether he had made it back to shore on his own or if someone nearby might have unknowingly helped him.
Then, early on Tuesday morning, police were notified that human remains had been discovered on Fence Reef Beach, north of Ledge Point. The call came in around 7:20am. While formal identification has not yet been completed, authorities have said the remains are believed to be those of the missing snorkeller.
Police have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will now be prepared for the coroner, which is a standard process in cases like this. For those who had been waiting and hoping, the discovery brings a painful sense of closure, even if many questions remain.
Ledge Point is known as a quiet coastal town and a popular holiday spot, especially during summer. News like this has shaken the community, serving as a sobering reminder of how quickly conditions at sea can change, even for experienced divers.
