Ancona Becomes Italy’s Paralympic Hub for Elite Athletics
Ancona is taking center stage in Italian sports this weekend, as the city hosts the 21st edition of the Italian Paralympic Indoor Athletics Championships and the Winter Throws Championships. Over 250 athletes from across the country are arriving to compete at two state-of-the-art venues: the PalaCasali indoor arena and the Italico Conti outdoor field.

The championships are organized by the Anthropos Civitanova sports society, under the umbrella of the Italian Federation of Paralympic and Experimental Sports, or FISPES. The regional sports councilor described the event as a model of inclusion, saying Ancona is cementing its reputation as Italy’s national hub for paralympic athletics.
Among the athletes taking part, the spotlight is on some of Italy’s most decorated paralympians. Assunta Legnante, a seven-time world champion and multiple Paralympic medalist, serves as the event’s special ambassador. Other stars include Oney Tapia, gold medalist in discus at the Paris Paralympics, Ambra Sabatini, Tokyo Paralympic gold medalist in the 100 meters and Ndiaga Dieng, world champion in the 800 meters. Their presence underscores the high level of competition and the growing prominence of paralympic sport in Italy.
The schedule is packed, with indoor training and competition on Friday, followed by a full day of indoor and outdoor events on Saturday.
