Australian Snowboarder Dies in Tragic Ski Lift Accident at Japan Resort
A day on the slopes ended in tragedy at a popular Japanese ski resort, after a young Australian woman lost her life in a devastating lift accident that has shaken both local staff and the international skiing community.
The incident happened at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in central Japan, a well-known destination that attracts visitors from around the world. The 22-year-old woman was riding a chairlift when, as she attempted to disembark, part of her backpack became caught in the lift mechanism. In a matter of moments, what should have been a routine exit turned into a critical emergency.
Resort officials say an unfastened buckle on the backpack became hooked onto the chair while another strap remained secured. As the lift continued moving, the woman was dragged along the snow and then left suspended in mid-air. Staff quickly hit the emergency stop and rescue efforts began immediately. First aid was administered at the scene and she was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

Despite those efforts, the woman suffered severe injuries and later died in hospital. Authorities believe she experienced cardiac arrest during the incident. The loss has prompted deep shock and sorrow, not only at the resort but across Australia and among travellers who frequent Japan’s ski regions.
The resort operator and lift company have issued a formal apology, expressing their condolences to the woman’s family and pledging full cooperation with police. An investigation is now underway to determine exactly how the accident occurred and whether safety procedures were followed correctly. Police are inspecting the lift equipment and questioning staff, while the lift involved has been taken out of service.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family, as they navigate the aftermath of this sudden and heartbreaking loss far from home.
This story matters far beyond one resort or one country. Ski lifts are used by millions of people every winter, often with little thought about risk. Incidents like this raise urgent questions about safety checks, staff training and the guidance given to skiers and snowboarders about equipment, clothing and backpacks while riding lifts.
For international travellers, it is also a stark reminder of how quickly accidents can happen, even in places known for strong safety standards. As investigations continue, resorts across Japan and elsewhere may face pressure to review their procedures to ensure this never happens again.
We will continue to follow developments closely, including the findings of the investigation and any changes announced by the resort. Stay with us for the latest updates and ongoing coverage as this story unfolds.
