Discord to Require Face Scan or ID for Adult Content Access
Discord is taking a major step in online safety, rolling out a global age verification system that could change how millions of people use the platform. Starting in early March, anyone who wants to access adult content on Discord will need to confirm their age, either by submitting a government ID or taking a video selfie. This is part of the company’s new “teen-by-default” approach, which aims to create a safer environment for younger users while still allowing verified adults to access age-restricted material.
The platform, which serves over 200 million monthly users, has already implemented similar measures in countries like the UK and Australia. But this is the first time Discord is applying them worldwide. For users who are not verified as adults, sensitive content will remain blurred, age-restricted channels will be blocked and direct messages from unknown users will be routed to a separate inbox. The goal is to reduce exposure to potentially harmful content while still giving adults flexibility once they’ve verified their age.

Discord says the process is designed with privacy in mind. Video selfies used for age estimation stay on your device and ID uploads are deleted after verification. However, privacy advocates have expressed concerns. In 2024, a data breach exposed around 70,000 user IDs during an age verification process, highlighting the potential risks of handling sensitive information. Discord assures users that new measures have stronger protections and that verification will usually be a one-time process.
Experts say these changes could have both positive and negative impacts. On one hand, the platform could attract parents and new users looking for a safer online space. On the other, enforcing age checks across millions of communities could create friction, potentially driving some users away. Discord is also setting up a Teen Advisory Council, a small group of 13- to 17-year-olds, to provide feedback on what makes teens feel safe and supported online, ensuring the company listens rather than assumes what young users need.
This move puts Discord in line with other major social platforms like TikTok, Facebook and Roblox, which have faced increasing pressure from lawmakers to protect minors. It also reflects growing scrutiny over online safety following reports of grooming, harassment and other criminal activity linked to social networks.
As Discord begins rolling out these changes, the world will be watching closely to see if age verification can be implemented effectively without compromising privacy or user experience. Stay with us for ongoing coverage and follow for updates on how this shift could reshape social interactions for millions across the globe.
