Don Lemon Arrested by Federal Agents Despite Offering to Surrender
A dramatic arrest inside a Los Angeles hotel has now pushed journalist Don Lemon into the center of a much larger national debate about press freedom, law enforcement power and how journalists are treated when covering protests.
Don Lemon says he was confronted by roughly a dozen federal agents who moved in to arrest him, even though his legal team had already told authorities he was willing to turn himself in. That protest disrupted a church service led by a pastor who also works as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official. Lemon strongly denies being part of any protest group and says he was there strictly in a journalistic role, documenting events as they unfolded.

After the arrest, Lemon says he was denied an immediate phone call and held overnight in a federal courthouse holding room until early afternoon the next day. In a striking personal detail, Lemon described trying to use his Apple Watch to reach his husband and his attorney, without success. He says his husband only learned of the arrest after agents agreed to deliver a bracelet Lemon was wearing to their hotel room. Otherwise, Lemon says, no one would have known where he was.
Lemon plans to plead not guilty and has publicly stated that he will not be silenced. The Department of Justice and the FBI have not yet commented on his account of the arrest.
